Made out of craft foam sheets, these DIY Fortune Cookies are great for Valentine’s Day, and even Lunar New Year!
Valentine’s Day and Lunar New Year are officially here—two holidays that I absolutely love! Of course, I love how Valentine’s Day makes us take a moment to let the ones we love know we love them, and, while I technically do not celebrate Lunar New Year as part of my personal culture, I always enjoy partaking in Lunar New Year activities because I love learning about (and appreciate!) other cultures.
So, this year, I wanted to create something that could celebrate both of these special occasions!
For this Valentine’s Day and Lunar New Year, I am making DIY Fortune Cookies!

These foam fortune cookies make for an adorable non-traditional Valentine’s Day card or fun well-wishes to family and friends for the new year! Not only are they cute, but they are also incredibly easy to make (they quite literally only take minutes to assemble!).
Read on to learn how to make DIY Fortune Cookies for your Valentine’s Day or Lunar New Year celebrations!
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- Craft foam sheets (I actually found heart-shaped craft foam at Dollar Tree and used those)
- A glass or small bowl
- A pencil
- Scissors
- Paper and pen
- Hot glue gun

Here’s How to Make Your DIY Fortune Cookies:
Using a cup (or small bowl), flip it upside down and place it on the craft foam sheet. With a pencil, lightly trace around the edge of the glass so you’ll have a perfect circle on the craft foam sheet.

Next, cut out the circle.

At this point, set your circle aside and cut a small strip of paper (you can use regular printer paper or a Valentine-printed paper). This will be for the fortune you tuck inside the cookie! On the strip of paper, write a sweet message to your recipient. I also drew a small heart on the end of my fortune so that, when I tucked the fortune into the cookie, you could see the small heart hanging out.

Feel free to personalize your message however you’d like, or even make some fortunes ahead of time on the computer!
Once the fortune is finished, it’s time to form the fortune cookie.
With your hot glue gun, apply a small amount of glue along the upper half of the circle, then fold the circle in half over the glue. Press the sides together until the glue is dry.

Now, slide your fortune into the open pocket at the bottom of the fortune cookie, leaving the heart out for the recipient to see (if you drew one).

Next, gently push the center of the cookie inward towards the glued edge and pinch the middle together. Apply a small dab of hot glue in the center of the fold and squeeze it together until the glue dries.

You now have a super adorable DIY Fortune Cookie!

Wasn’t that super easy to make?! And you can easily make a dozen of them in 30 minutes!
They certainly are a fun Valentine to hand out or could even make for a fun way to wish family and friends a Happy Lunar New Year!
