Create your own cloud at home with ivory soap for this fun DIY craft and science experiment! ☁️
One of the hardest things about summer is figuring out fun activities to keep your family occupied and entertained while you’re at home. This especially goes for when it’s far too hot outside to run around in the yard and you don’t want to settle for sitting in front of the screen all day. Instead, it’s time to bust out some crafting supplies to get creative! If you want a fun crafting project that doubles as a science experiment, then you are absolutely going to fall in love with this DIY. That’s right—we’re making our very own cloud!
My family and I made a cloud as a neat at-home experiment and it was cirrus-ly fun. (Sorry for the cloud joke!) This science experiment only requires a bar of Ivory soap and a few other simple items you likely already have at home. You’ll have a magical cloud within minutes!

Read on below to learn how to make your own DIY Cloud at home this summer!
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- A bar of Ivory soap (try to use ivory soap as you’ll get the best results with it versus a typical bar of soap)
- A piece of parchment paper or microwave-safe plate
- A cutting board
- A knife (to cut the ivory soap bar in half so you can maximize the fluffiness of your cloud—just make sure that if kids are helping with this experiment, do the cutting for them)

Here’s How to Make Your Own Cloud:
To make your fluffy cloud, begin by cutting your bar of Ivory soap on your cutting board. Save one half for another cloud (or for personal use later) and place the other half on a piece of parchment paper or a microwave-safe plate, whichever you have on hand. Whether you’re using parchment paper or a paper plate, either one will help ensure that there are no messes when microwaving the soap.

Now, place the soap in the microwave and turn it on for about a minute or so, watching your soap as it begins to rise and turn into a cloud. Make sure to crowd around the microwave to watch because trust me when I say that it is going to be mesmerizing. If your cloud needs more time to rise, you can keep adding time incrementally until it is fully formed and you are satisfied with your cloud.

Voilà! You now have your very own cloud! (Just make sure to be delicate when removing your cloud from the microwave and handling it as it can flake apart easily.)

Don’t worry about your soap going to waste, though! After marveling at your cloud and having fun with it, mix it into some water and it will turn right back into soap. Another fun idea, particularly for kids, is to break the cloud apart and sprinkle it over a bath to make a “cloud bath.” For more soap fun, you can also break apart the cloud and press it into cute molds (like stars or hearts!) to make adorable soap shapes for bath or shower time. The sky is the limit!

I hope you have some cirrus fun with your cloud making!
This looks fun. In fact, I think I’ll try this and then have the kids go out and play in the sprinklers. This way they could have some good clean fun! 😅
Thanks for sharing and coming up with some really fun ideas. 🙂👍
